Shade is the fifth Gym Leader of the Reborn region. He specializes in the Ghost-type and is fought at the Abandoned Power Plant, where he hands out the Omen Badge, the fourth Gym Badge the player receives.

In the game

Shade is first seen on the train that the player travels on to reach Reborn City, where he briefly appears behind the player before vanishing again.

He is next encountered when the player first enters Lapis Ward, where he will suddenly appear and remove Corey's body following the latter's suicide.

Shade is next seen in the Abandoned Power Plant after the player arrives the underground railnet, where the power source was off and Anna suggested that the player can go ask Shade to turn on the backup power source. After losing to the player, Shade agrees to power up the railnet.

He is later encountered after the Water Treatment Center incident, where he warns the player that their actions have consequences.

Shade is next encountered at the Glass Workstation where, as revealed by the explanations of Radomus, he pulls the player out of the void created by Gossip Gardevoir, and is also revealed to be a good friend of Luna's.

A special report from... the Investigation Squad! Yo, Reborn City! What's up?! We're here with the Reborn Rundown giving you a look at the leaders of the Reborn League! I'm your host, DJ Arclight, now on air! We've got some sort of mystery for you today, viewers. Let's talk about Shade, the Ghost Gym Leader. Most people aren't all that sure if Shade is human, a ghost himself, or maybe something else entirely! Given that he rarely speaks, and when he does, he seldom makes common sense, there's not a whole lot we can tell you about this entity. In battle, look out for his ace Pokemon, Mimikyu! That Pokemon hides nearly as much as the leader himself does, but rather than a sinister smile to top it off, Mimikyu's Disguise makes it hard to hit. Do your best not to let it get the jump on you... or else! That's all for now, but remember, Trainers, Keep fighting with everything you've got! Hold your spirits high, and even you can defeat the Reborn League!

• Even if it wasn’t apparent at first, three of the images seen in his gym’s four monitors have come true; Corey’s suicide, Amaria’s (failed) attempt at suicide, and Kiki’s death at the hands of Solaris’s Garchomp. The only one remaining is Lin's death.

• His Gengar is named after Corey, as well, implying it may very well be him- especially given that it's the only one of his Pokemon with a nickname.
• It is implied that Shade is involved in the following cases:
  • Suggesting Luna to runaway from El;
  • Recommending Noel to be a Gym Leader;
  • Helping Anna earn her position.
