Onyx Trainer's School, formerly the Pokemon Technical Institute-- Reborn's #1 Ivy League School

The Onyx Trainer's School is the second gym of the Reborn region, as well as a top-notch school for trainers. It is here that Titania, Julia, Florinia, and Amaria graduated. The Onyx Trainer's School holds the ward's Pokémon Center, as well as a host of books relating to Pokémon, evolution, base stats, and moves.

History

The third open room on the second floor contain the journals of Julia, Florinia, Amaria, and Titania, four sorority sisters and current gym leaders.

Julia's Entry
Soooo something superduperly cool happened today~

I. Made. Cheerleading Captain! Many booms were had. But I feel bad...Hey, that rhymes~

Anyway, I feel bad, because Amy had to give up her spot, orrrr, well, she didn't HAVE to, but she did. Buuuut, she recommended that I take her place, and I did!

Amy was such a great captain, though~ I can't understand why she wanted to leave...

And then afterwards, I wanted to go out to celebrate...But Tania and Amy were hanging out in their room like usual, so it was just Rini...And of course, Rini never wants to go anywhere, she's too shy... Mrrrrrrrr... So here I am... I think I'll just go to sleep...

Nightsies...

Florinia's Entry
Dear Diary,

This will be my final entry...

I've decided that retaining emotions simply isn't worth it anymore...Irrational thoughts and feelings remain a severe detriment to work efficiency...

...And moreover, they breed scorn in those with whom they are shared...

I have lost too much at the hands of emotions...Time, results, and now my friend...Well...there won't be that to worry about anymore.

Emotional excision will begin... Farewell, diary.

Titania's Entry
So, you think it's cool to go around reading other people's diaries. Hoping you'll find dirt on me here? Or maybe some...weeping emotional confession?

A little piece of advice: If you want to know someone, go talk to them, don't creep around their private files. However, if this is the kind of person you are, don't bother talking to me.

Amaria's Entry
I don't know, Diary...

I have everything a girl could possibly want... Status, a good education, the love of my life...

So... why does everything feel so grey?

I try to always smile and be cheery...I'm very good at it, apparently, or else I wouldn't have made cheerleader captain! But...

I guess I was secretly hoping that would make me happy on the inside, too. When it didn't, I resigned the spot. Julia's very happy about it though, so that's ok.

I just feel like...It doesn't matter what I do... In ten years, or in twenty, is anyone going to remember me?

I may be top of the class.. I may be winning prom queen... but it's all so trite...

Why won't anything make me happy...?

Why can't I feel...?

At least Titania tries, but... I know she doesn't...I sometimes just want to end it all...I don't know... Good night, Diary.

I'll see you in a meaningless tommorrow, with another false smile.

Present Day

First to greet the player is Fern, who declares the player is unfit to challenge his sister, and commands students to block the way in. With the gate to the gym closed, the students blocking the entrance to the school have passed, but only to challenge the trainer in an attempt to keep them away.

Places of interest

Giving-up Gamer

In the second floor of the school is a dejected gamer who has just gotten the news that the arcade's servers are down, and gives his Coin Case to the next person he sees out of frustration.

The Room of Suspicion

In the third room of the second floor is a glitchy computer, and a pile of notes that includes a cheat sheet. Putting the Data Chip into the computer will summon a Porygon. There's also Protective Pads

Nervous student

On second floor there is a nervous student. If you approach him from right, you'll scare him and open up a way to third floor.

Notes

Study Notes are found scattered around the school block.

Pokemon by Base Stat Total
Total: 300: Bagon, Baltoy, Beldum, Bellsprout, Bronzor, Croagunk, Deino, Dratini, Geodude, Gible, Klink, Lavitar, Minccino, Pikachu, Poliwag, Remoraid, Sandshrew, Snorount, Snubbel.

Total: 302: Gulpin.

Total: 303: Gollett, Yamask.

Total: 305: Carvanha, Cubchoo, Ducklett, Ferroseed, Machop, Mankey, Numel, Shellder, Shelmet, Smoochum, Timburr, Vanillite, Venonat.

...the rest of the pages are torn out.

Calculating Total Power
There are three factors in determining the end power of an attack.

Firstly, the Base Power of the move. Let's take the move Confusion for example. Confusion has 50 Base Power. Next, apply the multiplier based on type effectiveness. If Confusion is used on a Mankey, a Fighting Type, it will be Super Effective.

Therefore, the power is doubled to 100. If it were used on a Croagunk, for instance, it would be effective twice, and would double again to 200.

Finally, factor in the Same Type Attack Bonus, or STAB for short. This is a bonus for if a Pokemon uses an attack of its own type.

In other words, a Confusion attack from a Kadabra will be stronger than the same attack from Venonat, because Kadavbra is Psychic. It will be 1.5 times more effective. Venonat uses Confusion on Croakgunk, the total power is 200. If Kadabra uses it, then the total power is 300.

And it's as simple as that!

All about Huntail, the Deep Sea Pokemon
National Dex Number 367, Huntail is a unique species in terms of it evolution. Its pre-evolution, Clamperl, may become either Huntail or its sister species, Gorebyss, depending on what item is held when it is traded.

Huntail retains different strengths than Gorebyss, however, such as a more physically-based movepool to compliment its boosted Attack stat. Additionally, whereas Gorebyss' natural movepool takes on a Psychic pseudo-type, Huntail' could be said to follow that of a Dark-type.

Regardless, Huntail remains a fascinating contrast from a scientific standpoint on the impact of items on evolution.

Discharge vs Lava Plume
Discharge and Lava Plume, both attacks discovered during the Gen IV era, possess very similar traits. Each one has 100% accuracy, 80 base power, and affect all adjacent opponents on the field. They also both have a 30% chance to inflict status. However, whereas Discharge is Electric type, Lava Plume is Fire. Accordingly, they inflict different statuses- Paralysis and Burn, respectively.

Also notable, whereas Discharge is learned by a wide variety of Pokemon, only fifteen Pokemon can learn Lava Plume.

Room on First Floor (Coin case room)

All about Beartic, the Freezing Pokemon
Evolving from Cubchoo at level 37, Beartic is a unique Pokemon whose abilities allow it to thrive in multiple kinds of weather. It's Snow Cloak ability, one of the previous few hail-- dependent tactics grants it extra evasion in the snow.

On the other hand, it's one of only two non-Water types to get the Swift Swim ability, augmenting its lackluster speed. Because of its unique typing with Swift Swim, Beartic is a great addition to any rain team looking to balance out their types.

4-B 5-B 6-D

...

Somebody could get in a lot of trouble if this was found.

Study notes: Beat-Up Attack
Beat Up is a unique move. The Dark-type attack inflicts damage multiple times based on the number of healthy Pokemon in the user's party.

For instance, with four Pokemon, it will attack four times. However, the power of each hit is always dependent on the user's stats.

The power of each hit is determined by taking the Attack stat of the user, ignoring any boosts, dividing it by then, and adding five to the result.

Naturally, a high-attack Dark Type is best to use it.

All about Honchkrow, the Big Boss Pokemon
Honchkrow, like its pre-evolution Murkrow, is a Dark/Flying type, obtained by applying a Duck Stone to Murkrow. It's abilities include Insomnia, Super Luck, and most notably,Moxie.

Honchkrow is a great abuser of the move Sucker Punch, and proper timing combined with the Moxie ability can make Honchkrow a devastating force. However, by evolving into Honchkrow, a trainer could miss out on Murkrow's super-utile Prankster ability, so make sure to choose wisely.

On Fairytails
History has a habit of letting little girls wander past the forest's edge, only to be swallowed up by any umber of enchantments beyond.

She awakens in a tower, stone, cold, alone.

A dragon guards her, its fangs bared to the world, brimstone breath faithfully reserved for whatever metal-clad ignoramus thinks himself so mighty that even fire may not char his miserable flesh.

But there is only one who can slay the beast: the one to whom its back is turned.

Study notes: Never-miss moves
In total, there are thirteen damaging moves that have the effect of never missing their attack.

These moves are Swift, Aerial Ace, Manet Bomb, Magical Leaf, Aura Sphere, Feint Attack, Shadow Punch, Hyperspace Fury, Hyperspace Hole, Clear Smog, Shock Wave, Trump Card, Vital Throw and Disarming Voice.

Ground Floor Battlefield

The Fast and the Furious Pokemon!
Let's talk about Speed! It's a crucial element to winning battles-- knowing if you or your opponent will move first! So, it's important to know how fast each Pokemon is!

Let's look at the fastest! Deoxys, Speed Frome, reigns king, but its Normal and Attack Fromes aren't far behind!

However, Ninjask actually takes 2nd place! After that, it's Accelgor at 145 speed, and Electrode at 140! Yikes!

Down from there, there's a four-way tie between Crobat, Jolteon, Aerodactyl and Mewtwo, at just 130.

Then, Meloetta's Pirouette Frome, and the Sky Shaymin in after there!

Finally, Swellow, Weavile and Darkrai finish out our list with just 125 base speed.

That's it for the fastest Pokemon known to date! Study up!

All about Starmie, the Mysterious Pokemon
Stamie, the evolved form Staryu boasts greatly improved stats and viability from its pre-evolution. Regrettably, the natural movepool is not one of Starmie's strengths. Like most stone-evolved Pokemon, its natural moves become severely limited. In fact, it officially learns only five moves naturally, with four of them being at level 1.

These moves include Water Gun, Swift, Rapid Spin and Recover. The final move is Confuse Ray, learned at level 40. All in all, the choice to evolve Staryu is best made after it has already learned the move it will use.

Left Entrance

Corsola, the Coral Pokemon: An Overview
Corsola is considered Rock and Water typed. While not the best combination, it does have some unique strengths. It is given two very useful defensive abilities in Natural Cure and Regenerator, along with a host of defensive moves to support it.

Recover, Dual Screens and an assortment of defensive set-up moves give it strong staying power. Unfortunately, the Coral Pokemon is unlikely to see top-tier competitive use any time soon, lmited by its relatively low 410 Base Stat Total.

Dusclops, NFE Tank
Although outshined offensively by its evolution, Dusknoir, Dusclops, and evolution itself of the Ghost-Type Duskull, has some new options in combact!

Thanks to the popularization of the item Eviolite, which boosts the defenses of unevolved Pokemon, Dusclops is able to function as a supreme stall.

With defenses reaching in the 500's, Will-O-Wisp and Pain Split for staying power, it's going to take a good strong Ghost or Dark attack to KO Dusclops. For other move options, consider Shadow Sneak, Night Shade, or Confuse Ray!

After clearing the puzzles, Fern challenges the player and attempts to stop them, claiming he's keeping them from embarrassing themselves.

Telecommunicator

After passing all the challenges the school poses, another telecommunicator awaits the player with some helpful advice from Ame.

Ame
<Player>?

So you've made it to Florinia... Okay! So Florinia's fighting style is a little different from what you might expect from a Grass leader--her team is centered around sand. Her 'desert rose' fighting style can be tricky--she'll try to stall you out and take you down with residual sand damage and other status effects.

Florinia's all about knowledge and strategy, so try something different from that to beat her. Maybe you can find a way to abuse the sand and get lucky? Even if she insists that's not a factor...Or, pick something that hits hard and power through her before she can get her effects going! Brawn over brains, if you will.

Good luck!
