'Grounded' is a term used to describe Pokémon that are susceptible to Ground-type moves and several other ground-related effects, including:
- the ability Arena Trap
- the move Rototiller
- the entry hazards Spikes, Toxic Spikes and Sticky Web
Many Fields have effects that apply only to grounded Pokémon.
Ungrounded Pokémon[]
A Pokémon is ungrounded (or airborne) if any of the following apply:
- It has the Flying type
- It has the ability Levitate
- It is holding an Air Balloon
- It is under the effect of Magnet Rise or Telekinesis
Note that in Reborn, grounded Pokémon in the semi-invulnerable turn of a move (including Dig, Dive, Fly, Bounce and Sky Drop) are still considered grounded for the purposes of Field Effects.
Grounded Pokémon[]
By default, grounded Pokémon are simply those that are not airborne. However, there are also several effects that can cause an airborne Pokémon to become grounded. A Pokémon will become grounded if any of the following apply:
- It is holding an Iron Ball
- It is under the effect of Ingrain or Smack Down/Thousand Arrows
- Gravity is in effect
- If it is ungrounded only because of its Flying type and uses the move Roost, it will become grounded till the end of the turn
