Heyyyy, you're cute!
Cain LaRue is a former Poison type Gym Leader of the Reborn League, a rival of the player, and the younger brother of Aya.
Cain is a flirt, especially to the player regardless of the player's gender, and would occasionally chime in innuendos and jokes. Cain doesn't seem to take things seriously in a daily basis, but will mostly drop that attitude when someone is in trouble. He seems to have an instinct to look out for younger kids, especially Heather and Shelly.
Story Events[]
Grand Hall[]
Cain is first met at the Grand Hall, shortly after the player has chosen their starter Pokémon, and he will flirt with the player - regardless of the player's chosen gender - before challenging them to their first battle, after which Cain happily takes it upon himself to show the player around the Grand Hall. He then leaves the player to speak with Ame while the player battles Victoria. After the battle, Cain informs the player and Victoria that they can speak to Ame to finish their league registration and leaves.
Coral Ward[]
Cain is not encountered again until the player reaches the Coral Ward. Here, Cain arrives just in time to help Amaria save a Popplio (Oshawott prior to Episode 17) stranded up in the water. Sending his Grimer (Which is an Alolan Grimer from Episode 17 onwards) to safely navigate the poisonous waters (and singing a heroic song all the while), Cain manages to rescue the Popplio. At first, Cain is content to just head on his way, but when the Popplio continues to follow him, Cain gives into its adorable appearance and adds it to his team, despite using a Pokémon that is not a Poison-type, and has a battle using it against the player to calm its jitters. Cain then leaves, claiming he has issues he has to handle in the Byxbysion Wasteland.
Rhodochrine Jungle[]
If the player ends up trapped in a Nuzleaf cage in Rhodochrine Jungle, Cain will also be trapped in a similar cage and must be freed by the player to progress the plot. The player, Cain, and Heather will team up to flip a three-part switch and free Cain and the player, after which the group splits up to chase down Team Meteor. Regardless of whether the player freed Cain from the Nuzleaf cage, he will show up to fight Team Meteor at the Rhodochrine Tree, challenging either ZEL (if Cain was saved) or Taka (if the player avoided being captured) to a battle. During the battle between the player and Ace, Cain disappears off-screen.
Lapis Ward - Grand Stairway[]
Cain's next appearance occurs shortly after the player's first visit to the Lapis Ward. After the player meets Shelly, Cal, Shade, Aster, and Eclipse outside the Lapis Gym and learns that Team Meteor was responsible for the explosion at the Grand Stairway, Cain spots the player through the crowd. If the player was not captured at Rhodochrine, Cain reveals that he was still captured but was freed by Heather, then (regardless of the events at Rhodochrine) says he's been looking for Heather but can't find her. Furthermore, he had been watching the site of the North Obsidia explosion to see if Heather would show up there, but followed Aster and Eclipse to the player instead. Cain then proposes creating a diversion so that the player can investigate the Grand Stairway and interfere in Team Meteor's plans before heading off to the Obsidia Ward.
Once the player arrives at the Grand Stairway, Cain distracts one of the police officers guarding the bomb site by flirting with him, creating a path for the player to slip past the officers and enter the caverns below.
Lapis Orphanage[]
After watching Victoria and Cal leave for Apophyll Academy shortly after the player defeats Shelly, Cain again finds the player just outside the Lapis Gym, where he asks the player for a battle before he goes to challenge Shelly. As soon as the player defeats Cain, Heather shows up. Cain tells Heather that he's been looking for her because he wants to make sure she's okay after what happened with Corey, but Heather dismisses his concern. Dr. Connal then exits the Lapis Gym, having finished meeting with Shelly, and forcibly takes Heather into his custody after learning she has no legal guardian.
Cain protests Connal's decision, but is unable to stop Sigmund. Shortly thereafter, Shelly comes out to see Heather, and is dismayed to learn that Connal has taken Heather (and has the legal authority to do so). Cain tells Shelly that he's going to rescue Heather, even though it could get him in legal trouble, because he believes Heather really is better off on her own, and asks the player for help. Shelly asks to come along as well, because she blames herself for Heather running into Sigmund, and the trio heads over to the Orphanage.
Once Anna unlocks the door for the player, Cain, Shelly, and the player join forces with three of the orphanage's current residents — Charlotte, Noel, and Anna — to save Heather. When first noticed by the orderlies, the player will fight in a Double Battle alongside Cain if they have more relationship points with Cain than with Shelly.
During the orphanage rescue, Cain stays downstairs to hold off the orderlies while Shelly and the player team up to explore the upstairs areas. After Heather is rescued, Cain suggests that the group hide out in the Railnet while they figure out what to do next just before Anna and the player are ambushed by Dr. Connal. Cain can then be found in the Railnet and remains there until the player defeats Shade.
Blacksteam Factory[]
After defeating Shade, a cutscene plays, showing Cain and the rest of the orphanage fugitives waiting in the Railnet for Shade to restore power to the gate keeping them from escaping the city. The gate opens, only to reveal that a group of Team Meteor members, led by Sirius, had been lying in wait in order to capture the children. Anna throws something (later revealed to be a Data Chip containing information on Team Meteor that Corey embedded in the Ruby Ring before his death) to Cain before he alone escapes by ordering his Nidoking to use Earthquake and block the path.
Cain can then be found outside the Jasper Police Station, looking for the player so that they can discuss things further. Inside, Amaria is waiting, and tells the player that Cain ran into her shortly thereafter, explaining his situation and asking for help. While Amaria is not technically skilled enough to get any information off the Data Chip Anna tossed to Cain, she does recruit an ally to assist: Ace, last seen on Team Meteor's side in Rhodochrine, although they claim to have left that life behind them.
Cain is immediately distrusting of Ace's supposed defection, even after Amaria explains that they helped her escape Team Meteor and defended her from Lin, even at the cost of their job. Ace then reveals — using the information on the Data Chip that Corey stole from Team Meteor — that there is a PULSE in Blacksteam Factory in the nearby Peridot Ward, and the group heads over to destroy the PULSE and protect the region.
If talked to before the Blacksteam raid, Cain asks the player if they can really trust Ace, expressing doubt in their true loyalties no matter what the player answers. He ends up being right to suspect Ace, as they reveal inside the factory that they were, in fact, still loyal to Meteor and that Cain, too, has now been captured by Team Meteor.
Azurine Island[]
While exploring Azurine Island in search of Team Meteor, one of Cain's earrings can be found lying on the ground, letting the player know that he was here at some point (and is likely currently being held on the island). Once the player breaks into Team Meteor's Azurine base, they will find Cain being held prisoner by Taka, who challenges the player to a battle in an attempt to capture them as well. Taka also will reveal that Team Meteor plans to use a PULSE Camerupt at Pyrous Mountain to destroy Apophyll Academy before leaving, and the player can then free Cain from his cell. Cain then picks up the box containing an Emerald Brooch that was supposed to be delivered to Sirius before he and the player head back to Apophyll.
Pyrous Mountain[]
Cain and the player then head back to Apophyll Academy to tell Victoria about the PULSE before heading to Pyrous Mountain to stop Team Meteor. Once the trio enters the mountain, Cain heads up the mountain ahead of Victoria and the player in order to help Cal, who is already at the top of Pyrous Mountain and presumably fighting Team Meteor. By the time the player makes it to the mountain's peak, Cain has already been defeated, leaving the player and Victoria to fight Solaris and Taka, respectively.
Cain attempts to comfort Victoria after Kiki is killed and the PULSE destroyed before the group returns to Apophyll Academy. There, Victoria confronts Cain about his hesitance to go deal with the PULSE in Byxybsion because he doesn't want to visit his family, causing Cain to abruptly leave.
Byxbysion Wasteland[]
Cain can then be found waiting outside the gate to the Byxbysion Wasteland, where he unlocks the gate so that the player (and anyone else) can get into the area before heading in himself.
Before the player enters the Wasteland Hideout, Cain can be found doing his best tall grass impression outside. If talked to, Cain tells the player that he doesn't know whether he wants to talk to his family or not, because they were not supportive of him in the past. After learning that the player has already met with Team Meteor and that the PULSE was inactive, he leaves.
After fighting Aya, the player learns that Cain used to be Reborn's Poison Gym Leader before he left, leaving his Pokémon behind and passing the position onto his older sister.
Cain can next be found blocking the exit out of the Wasteland. There, he explains that he couldn't bear to interact with his family. Furthermore, Cain says that he realized that he hasn't been thinking things through — ever since he left home, he's just been reacting to events without a clear goal in mind. He then challenges the player to a battle, joking that winning the fight would count as earning the Blight Badge so he doesn't have to fight his sister. After losing, Cain apologizes to the player before heading off to the Railnet to rescue the captured kids.
Yureyu HQ[]
After finally acquiring the TMX for Strength, the player and Cain can now rescue the children from Team Meteor's clutches in the former Yureyu HQ. Cain partners with the player for all battles in this area, turning them into double battles. As they venture through the building, Cain and the player encounter considerable Meteor resistance, and help rescue Charlotte, Shelly, and Noel.
On the seventh floor of the building, the player and Cain will encounter Dr. Sigmund Connal and Heather. Sigmund tells Cain and the player that he partnered with Team Meteor to rescue the captured fugitives in exchange for Heather's Ruby Ring before asking the player if they will insist on a fight.
If the player chooses to fight Sigmund, they will do so in a Double Battle alongside Cain; after being defeated, Sigmund will head to the next floor up.
If the player chooses not to fight, Sigmund will inform the player that he joined Team Meteor not because he supports their actions, but because he recognizes a name he hears thrown about among the members. Furthermore, promises not to stop the player and Cain from taking Heather with them when they leave.
After either fighting Sigmund or choosing to stand down, the player and Cain head to the top floor of the Yureyu HQ, where Sirius, Anna, and potentially Sigmund (if the player fought him) are waiting. Sirius taunts Anna with knowledge about her father and her stolen Amethyst Pendant, before Cain asks him to stop and give Anna her necklace back. If the player did not fight Sigmund, Cain and them will then fight Sirius in a Double Battle.
After the player wins (or does not fight), Sirius then grabs Anna as a hostage. Cain offers the Emerald Brooch he picked up in Azurine Island as a trade for Anna's life, which Sirius accepts. Afterwards, Anna insists that the group leave immediately. As the player leaves, the game remains focused on Sirius, who realizes that the "Emerald Brooch" is in fact a fake made of the explosives material verdignite right before it explodes, severely damaging the building.
Underground Railnet[]
Cain, the player, and the rest of the group then escape into the Railnet, where unfortunately rubble blocks the path out. Cain attempts to talk to Heather, who has gone nonverbal since being rescued from Dr. Connal, while the player clears the way for the group to crash an abandoned train through the rubble. After taking the train through the Railnet and into the Chrysolia Region, Heather immediately flies away on her Salamence when she sees open skies. Cain then leaves to track down Heather.
Vanhanen Castle[]
Cain next appears in Vanhanen Castle, aiming to challenge Radomus to a Gym Battle. He informs the player that Heather has been adopted by Blake in Ametrine City before battling the player to see who will get to fight Radomus first.
After being defeated, Radomus receives a letter saying that Gossip Gardevoir has been captured by El and he will return her in exchange for his daughter, Luna. Although initially hesitant to depart on a rescue mission (despite Cain and Luna protesting), Radomus eventually acquiesces to go rescue his Gardevoir.
Citae Astrae[]
The player, Radomus, and Cain next meet up at the Grand Gates. After watching El flee past one of the large gears that controlled the long-broken gates, the group follows him into the caverns below the Grand Stairway (after jumping down the first time, the player cannot leave unless they black out or complete this gameplay segment).
After wandering through the caverns, the group arrives in a large open cavern filled with greenery and a large tower. Here, they meet Adrienn and Gossip Gardevoir, who insist that Radomus had mistreated his Gardevoir and brainwashed Luna. Gossip Gardevoir then steals the Amethyst Pendant from the player, later giving it to El. As the group chases El up the building, using the Ruby Ring to unlock passages, Adrienn reveals that xe arrived here shortly before Cain, Radomus, and the player, furthermore stating that xe is also as confused as them at what is going on. One of El or Radomus must be lying, but neither Adrienn nor Cain is sure who to trust.
Once the player, Cain, Radomus, and Adrienn catch up with El at the entrance to the central tower, Cain yields to the player when they are asked to side with either Radomus or El. Regardless of the player's choice, Radomus reveals that the "Gardevoir" that has been accompanying El is in fact a Ditto, which El then transforms into an Arceus before challenging the player to a battle. If the player sided with Radomus, they must win this fight, but are not required to win if they sided with El. Afterwards, Gossip Gardevoir (the real one) appears and knocks El unconscious. Then, the group returns to the surface, where they find that the Grand Gates have reopened.
Vanhanen Castle[]
After helping Adrienn through xyr confusion at being frozen in time, Radomus, Cain, Gossip Gardevoir, and the player return to Vanhanen Castle so that the player and Cain can get their Gym Badges. Cain appears visibly uncomfortable when Radomus introduces a hypnotized El to him and the player as the castle's new butler, but chooses to stay and assist Radomus in the castle's chess puzzles nonetheless.
Once the player has defeated Radomus and acquired their seventh Gym Badge, the lights in the arena cut out. Cain rescues the player when they are ambushed by Elias, promsing to hold him off (or attempt to, as Elias is here revealed to be part of the Elite 4) while the player leaves to go rescue Luna.
Subseven Sanctum[]
Cain next appears being held hostage by Bennett in the Subseven Sanctum, ensuring that the player does not interfere with the ceremony and rescue Luna. After being freed by Gossip Gardevoir, Cain helps the player free Luna before the group escapes. Cain then heads off to Agate City to see if he can wake up the sleeping guards at the gate.
Agate City - Agate Circus[]
After obtaining the Eclipse Badge from Luna, Cain can be found at the entrance to Agate City, where he destroys the barrier blocking the way through with his Nidoking. Cain and the player can then enter the city, only to find Hardy and Aya sleeping on the ground. Cain also begins to feel sleepy himself, only to be rescued by Terra, who uses her hammer to send both Aya and Hardy flying east before guiding Cain and the player to the Agate Circus.
Cain and the player then meet inside the back room of the circus tent, where Aya was brought after her impromptu crash-landing. After Aya wakes up and asks about Hardy, Cain asks the player to go look for him while he catches up with his older sister (and apologizes for ditching the Gym Leader title onto her).
Route 3[]
After defeating Samson and acquiring the TMX for Surf, the player can find Cain, Aya, and Hardy in Ametrine Mountain, standing in front of a large ice wall blocking the way to Ametrine City. Once Hardy tries — and fails — to break the ice with his Gigalith, the group decides to head to Calcenon City to get assistance from the Leaders there currently fighting Team Meteor.
Unfortunately, the steps up to the closest entrance to Calcenon are destroyed by a blast from PULSE Clawitzer right as the group arrives, so Cain, Hardy, Aya, and the player have to take the long way around. Shortly thereafter, Aya and the player are separated from Cain and Hardy by another stray blast, forcing the group to split up.
Calcenon City[]
Cain can next be found inside a building in Calcenon City with Anna, Noel and Shelly. He isn't particularly concerned when the player informs him that Aya has been captured, insisting that they should be more concerned about her captors than her. Cain then decides to stay in Calcenon to watch over the kids.
After defeating Blake in Ametrine City, Cain can be found outside said building, informing the player that Meteor knows they have the Ruby Ring and asks the player not to draw attention to themselves in Calcenon. Once the player defeats Ciel, Cain can then be found outside in northwest Calcenon, looking for the twins as they have apparently gone missing. Once the player has defeated Titania, Hardy will tell the player in Calcenon that Cain went off with Shelly looking for the twins and has not returned.
Glass Workstation[]
Cain is next encountered in the Glass Workstation under the control of PULSE Hypno's brainwashing. He and Shelly fight the player in a Double Battle before the player is also pulled under the Hypno's spell.
Cain appears several times during the void segment in the Glass Workstation. Unlike most of the individuals the player encounters, Cain appears to be his normal, conscious self and is actively aware of what is going on, asking the player to stick with him several times before running off on an invisible path. The third time the player runs into Cain, he tells the player that all he's been doing since leaving home running in circles with no real purpose, not feeling like he belongs anywhere or with anyone, before asking the player to go on ahead without him. Cain then stays in the void and is nowhere to be found once the player escapes themselves.

Trivia[]
- When put together with Aya, Cain's name is a word play on “iocane”, a fictional poison from The Princess Bride. Cain's name can also be a biblical reference, chosen because Cain betrays his sibling and runs away from his responsibilities.
- His VS sprite is based on that of Falkner from Pokémon Heart Gold and Soul Silver.
- Cain flirts with anyone (Charlotte and Adrienn), regardless of gender, but he mainly flirts with the player.
- Three of Cain's Pokemon (Nidoran, Grimer and Cubone) can be found in Byxbysion Wasteland, the place where he lives.
- Although Alolan Grimer is encountered in another place, regular Muk can appear as encounters.
- The songs Cain sings throughout the story are references of songs sung in the Pokémon series
- Comin' to the Rescue, the theme song of Pikachu's Rescue Adventure (Coral Ward)
- We Will Be Heroes, opening theme song for The Rise of Darkrai (Beryl Ward)
- My Best Friends, ending song for Pokemon Heroes: Latias & Latios (Lapis Gym)
- Believe in me, opening song for Pokemon Heroes: Latias & Latios (Dr. Connal's Orphanage)
- PokeRap GS, also known as Johto PokeRap (Apophyll Academy)
- Pokemon Theme, the opening theme for the anime's first season (Yureyu HQ)
- Everything Changes, featured on the Pokémon 2.B.A. Master CD (Agate Circus)
- When Cain couldn't continue the online league anymore, he decided to recommend his sister, Aya, to take his position instead. This coincides with Aya being the Gym Leader in-game after he runs away and leaves the responsibility to her. [1]
