Something about how little insects can go from what they are to something so much more is just so exciting!
Bennett Voclain is a member of the Elite Four of the Reborn League, and the son of Serra. He specializes in Bug type and Fire type. He, together with Laura, forms a tag team that serves as the 2nd opponent the player faces during the player's first Elite Four challenge. During subsequent challenges, he's the 4th and final member.
Bennett is very studious and knowledgeable, but isn't very socially adept. He can usually go on tangent about his interests despite what others think. Bennett can be quite self deprecating to himself at times and lashes out on other due to his insecurities.
Story Events[]
Spinel Town - Voclain Estate[]
Bennett is first met outside the Voclain Estate, when a PokeMart was teleported to the roof of the Gym. He requests to battle the player before the player battles Serra, as he thinks that this is the most efficient way of training to be a future Gym Leader. After losing to the player, El finds potential in Bennett and invites Bennett to follow him.
After the gym battle ends, Serra returns to her living room and tells the player that Bennett left to go study with El to join the Elite Four. While talking, she mentions how Luna and Gossip Gardevoir also chose to leave Serra, and how all things seem to fade away. This is also a reference to her previous life as a former model before choosing to leave her career behind to take care of Bennett.
Subseven Sanctum[]
After the player goes to 7th Street to find Luna, the player finds Bennett. He leads the player into Subseven Sanctum, where the player is tricked by Bennett and El and caged up. After the player manages to sneak and maneuver their way around the guards and solve the biblical gate code, Luna is found before El can begin their ritual to forget all about Radomus, with Cain being held as a hostage by Bennett. However, Radomus and Gardevoir ambushed El and his disciples.
Iolia Valley[]
While traversing through Iolia Valley, the player will find Bennett along the way, who is searching for Luna in order to apologize (and admit his feelings for her). After meeting up with Luna, Bennett catches up and tries to apologize and confess, only to be turned away by Luna who returns to her gym chambers where she can't be followed. Bennett will challenge the player to a battle in order to retrieve the key. Once defeated, Bennett calls himself stupid for even trying and leaves, and tells the player the next time they meet, it will be different.
He is indirectly mentioned by Charlotte and Laura when Charlotte tells the player that Laura was laid off by Ame from the Elite Four suddenly. Ame then later mentions Bennett to register his types for the Elite Four, wondering why Laura suddenly resigned from the Elite Four.
Glass Workstation[]
Bennett appears again in the Glass Workstation, with a new outfit and acts diffrent than before. He explains that this was was a trap that the two perfectly fell into: it was intentionally set up so that the only glass that would break would be the one that lead to the elevator shaft. Now that the player and Hardy are funneled into a small area, they are both rendered unconscious by the same means as the sleeping spell over Agate City.
Zero is later found with Bennett in the Glass Factory, controlling the PULSE-Hypno responsible for Agate City's sleepy veil. He talks to the player like if Eve and Lumi were still inside him, indicating he might suffer from schizophrenia. He reveals that PULSE-Hypno was mentally controlling Cain and Shelly, and command them to battle the player. After the latter wins, Bennett tells Zero to let Shelly go, only to take control of the player instead.
After the player escapes Gardevoir's black hole, Radomus explains what happened while the player was under the PULSE-Hypno's control. After Gardevoir used the black hole in order to protect Radomus, Zero and Bennett argued over what happened, and Bennett says Zero is a high-ranked Team Meteor member only thanks to Eve and Lumi, as he was a simple grunt before the Magneton/Magnezone event. After Gardevoir created the black hole, Zero is told by Bennett to report the events of what happened to their superiors in Labradorra City, but Bennett immediately regrets this and asks Laura to catch Zero before it's too late, despite being the one to take the Elite Four position from her. Laura forgives him and Bennett gives her the Sapphire Bracelets since it belonged to her family. Both of them go to Labradora City together, which Saphira finds out later and tells the player if anything happens to Laura, Bennett will regret it.
Calcenon City[]
Eventually, Saphira finds Bennett, along with Laura and Zero. She then grabs him by the arm, and takes him straight to Calcenon City. On their way there, he and Laura explain to her that he has abandoned Team Meteor and now wants to fight back against them. The player finds them there, as Bennett is telling Saphira to unhand him. Saphira is extremely distrustful of Bennett and what he told her, so she demands him to tell her the truth. In response, Bennett informs her that treating a compliant harshly will not get her the information she wants. Bennett reiterates what he has already told her, to which she then threatens to harm Zero should Bennett not tell her what she wants to hear. He immediately denies any guilt in Zero's harm, as it is Saphira who is choosing to harm him. Additionally, he tells her that it'd be far more effective if she threatened to harm Laura instead, for which Saphira hits him. She tells him to never presume she'd hurt her sisters. He retorts by telling her she doesn't seem to care about hurting anyone else. Saphira questions his sense of loyalty, and he questions hers in return. She hits him again. At that point, Laura puts herself between Bennett and Saphira. The two sisters argue, and Laura suggests that Sigmund himself is likely doing what he thinks is for the best of others. This argument triggers Saphira, who is then taken away by Laura to a nearby building. Bennett is relieved by this, but he also agrees with Hardy about the awkwardness of the moment.
Lumi and Eve arrive soon after, and the former worries greatly about Zero. Bennett clarifies that he's under the effects of Sleeping Power, and that he couldn't be allowed to reach Labradorra. Eve asks him if he's really intending to turn tail on Team Meteor. Bennett assures her he is, even if no one except for Laura believes him. He claims that if his motives don't pertain to the greater good, then they pertain to making things right and supporting Laura in any way he can. Lumi believes him, and Eve points out that regardless of wether he is believed in or not, his course of action will not change. She also correctly identifies the offer he presents, which is to disable the barrier. Bennett confirms her conclusions, and he elaborates to the player and Hardy that he would cross the barrier with Zero, as they are both authorized. He would then explain to Team Meteor that he rescued Zero from the hands of their enemies, and use that as an opportunity to cut PULSE 09 - Mr. Mime's power supply. Hardy doubts his allegiance, as he could cross the barrier and never help them. Bennett replies that he cannot make him any guarantees, and Eve adds that they have no choice but to trust someone from inside Team Meteor. Bennett is thankful to be given the opportunity to prove his allegiance.
Later, Victoria and Cal enter the scene, and the former begins to berate the latter for Kiki's death. Bennett decides to stay off that conversation along with Hardy. After their conversation is done, Bennett and Hardy once again agree on the awkwardness of the moment. Bennett and Lumi presume it may not be best time to begin the raid. He announces their time is limited until Zero wakes up, however. From there, Bennett decides to wait in front of the barrier until the player tells him to begin the raid.
When the player gives him the signal, he accepts. He advices the player to get everyone else ready, as depending on how much he has to explain to Meteor, it could be a while before he gets the chance to shut down the barrier. With that said, he assures the player he'll get it done, and he walks to Labradorra with Zero on his shoulder.
Labradorra City[]
Bennett is next found leaving LCCC with Laura. The pair is quickly intercepted by Elias, who firstly condemns Bennett for hs lack of faith. Bennett mocks his belief and, anticipating Elias's interference, tells Laura to go on ahead. She refuses, which startles him. Laura asserts that she learned to stand together with her sisters when they had no other choice. Elias demands for Bennett to pay back his debt of gratitude. Bennett retorts by telling him that they were always using each other, and that even if he ropes him back, Team Meteor will not forgive him. He tells Elias that he is not intimidated by him, that he owes him nothing, and that his daughter's in a black hole. He finishes by telling him he can thank Team Meteor for that, and promptly leaves with Laura. They do not appear in Labradorra Arena.
Bennett is next found leaving LCCC with Laura. The pair is quickly intercepted by Elias, who questions Bennett's loyalty, and offers him an opportunity to join him once again. He refuses to repent and bow to Elias. Elias recognizes the streets are only filled with "lunatics howling in the streets", and that he may yet be a ram bleating for its master. In reply, Bennett asks him if that includes his "boyfriend" (Solaris), to which Elias informs him that he has disappeared after being overthrown. Bennett expresses his lack of care about this, and begins to leave. Elias demands for Bennett to pay back his debt of gratitude. Instead, Bennett tells him that he'd sooner pity him for the loss of his daughter, and the raid on Labradorra. He advices to blame Solaris or Lin, believing both apply. Bennett refuses to accept his sermons, and he thus leaves with Laura. They do not appear in Labradorra Arena.
Charous Hall[]
When the player meets Laura in Charous Hall, Bennett joins her soon after. The two explain that they reached a compromise between each other, which was to fight together, each representing one of the two Types each Elite Four member uses. They had previously gotten permission from Grand Hall to fight that way. As Laura speaks about flowers renewing themselves, Bennett speaks about adaptation as a necessary trait for organism. He claims those who don't change fall behind, that he intends to change, and that he hopes the player does so as well. As such, Bennett tells the player he and Laura will adapt to each other's styles, hoping to see how the player has adapted to their circumstances. After their defeat, Bennett asks the player if they know what Apolysis is. He is impressed if the players answers 'yes'. Regardless of what the player answers, he explains that he means to say the player's growing. He adds that he hopes to see the new heights the player reaches. Afterwards, the pair surrenders the Sapphire Bracelets to the player, with Bennett admitting they shouldn't have left the player's care in the first place.
Nightclub[]
Bennett shows up in the Nightclub in Tier 1 on the postgame. He appears alongside Laura, who along with him was informed by Julia that the player had been cursed to become a Wimpod. To him, the reason the player ran away was because of their Wimpod instincts kicking in. This was a lie, by Julia's own admission. Bennett doesn't know this, however, so he apologizes for his prior actions, and asks the player how it felt like to be a Wimpod. The player says absolutely nothing, which disappoints Bennett, who apologizes to the player again. Both him and Laura tell the player they're glad to see them again.
Charous Hall[]
Bennett is revealed to be the last Elite Member the player and Flora must fight in order to reach the Champion's room. Bennett greets them both, and is immediately asked by Flora wether he is gay or a Bug-Type trainer. He introduces himself as a combatant and a lepidopterist, which Flora finds disgusting. Bennett pays it little mind, and notes that the roles are reversed on this instance. Rather than the player fighting a pair Bennett is part of, he must know fight a pair the player is part of. Flora assumes he meant Bennett and Laura are a couple, for which she wonders why she'd be with a creep such as him. This leaves Bennett aghast by his own admission, who clarifies they're only a pair in battles. He states he maintains proper hygiene, and that after his past actions he has consistently tried to listen and respect others' boundaries in both action and thought. He wonders what about him makes him a creep, and Flora tells him it's just the Bug Types. Bennett is once again taken aback, and moves forward to the battle, that way Flora can be rid of him. During the battle, Bennett finds the player and Flora's strategy as a tag team unconventional.
After his defeat, Flora shouts about how pathetic it is that Bennett lost, even being a Fire and Bug Type trainer. Though he admits he may be out of his depth, Bennett also reminds her that she is being escorted by the Champion. Flora tells him to shut up, and he opens the door forward, wishing them good luck in their endeavors. After Flora leaves, the player can speak to Bennett. He claims to feel incredibly more grateful to have a partner as kind as Laura. Because of Flora's comments, he asks the player if they still feel he is creepy. He feels relieved if they don't, and slightly upset if they do. Regardless of how he feels, he welcomes a reality check, not wishing to grow complacent. He is thankful for the player's perspective.
Victory Road - Aegir Cave[]
Later on, Bennett hears about an Anomaly in Victory Road. He goes there, finds Victini, and chases it for a while before the player finds him, still doing that. He advances further to a crystal sorting machine, which Victini jumps over. The machine's crystal-sorting puzzle proves a hurdle to himself, so he asks the player for help with it. Soon after completing it, Serra finds the two of them, looking for Victini as well. Bennett is not pleased to see her, and only allows her to go on with him on one condition: that they are both working as equals, with equal respect, representing their official league, working to ensure the safety of their region. He does not want to be with her as family, and with his conditions made clear, he moves forward.
Down in Aegir Cave, the trio finds Victini, but it is too high to be reached. Bennett infers that they must be some distance away from Victory Road, but not in the New World. Noticing a campfire with a spoon and a pot, Bennett gets the idea of luring Victini in with food. After studying the area, Bennett's idea is to cook up a Spiced Apple Galarian-style Curry. He stays next to the campfire, offering hints to the player on where to find the necessary ingredients.
Once the player finds the ingredients and hands them to Bennett, he congratulates them. Serra comes back from washing the pot, and decides to start cooking. She's surprised when she hears Bennett's planned dish, and makes fun of having a large curry in a cave. Bennett tells her to leave the cooking to him, which she responds by reminded him he's only ever prepared microwaveable food on his own. However, Bennett tells her he has learned to take off himself outside of her homes, which includes cooking. He expresses his wish to demonstrate such. In response, Serra suggests they cook together, as equals. Bennett accepts this.
Once the curry is done, Serra compliments Bennett's presentation of it as he further condiments it. Bennett notes that, from her line of work, she'd understand presentation is half of the appeal. He does't think it's the half that matters, though. Bennett thanks his mother for her praise and aid. He then promptly invites Victini to feed on the curry, and it accepts his invitation. Bennett lets the player take Victini, which surprises Serra. He doesn't mind it, however, as Victini isn't an Anomaly, and he will get his chance to catch a legendary some other time.
After the player catches Victini, Serra appreciates that Bennett brought him alone, but claims she didn't do anything. Bennett strongly disagrees, reminding her of her help with the kitchenware and cooking, and advising her to treat herself as equally respectable as well. Serra's shocked by the fact that she heard that from her son, to which Bennett replies that everyone needs a reminder from time to time. Serra then says she will contemplate her flawed perspective, which Bennett is fine with, as long as she contemplates improving it.
Nightclub[]
Bennett later asks the player through Zero to go check on the Belrose sisters in the Mirage Tower.
Another Time[]
Ten years into the future, Bennett has quit the Elite Four alongside Laura, and has moved in to her in Belrose Manse. They both take care of plants and bug Pokemon, such as Galvantula, with their respective families coming to visit them frequently. This includes Serra, Luna, Saphira, and Charlotte. The player and Taka find her and Bennett speaking to Amaria in Agate City. Amaria asked them for advice regarding her new houseplants. She happens to mention bug Pokemon which give her shocks eating her plant. This causes Laura and Bennett to monologue on the various benefits and drawbacks of Joltik for her plant, her house, and herself. When the player speaks to Bennett, he informs them that Shell knew they'd be back, which he trusted, as he trusts her. He also mentions that some people became agitated when they found out he was trying to buy replacement for his Genesect's cannon, or even fertilizer. Regardless of that, Bennett assures the player he is content, as Laura's company is wonderful to him. Lastly, Bennett appears in the group photo of Reborn’s League.
