Hope is weakness. It's an illusion meant to sugarcoat this sickening reality.
Corey Molinar is the third Gym Leader of the Reborn region, as well as the father of Heather. He specializes in the Poison-type and is fought at Beryl Gym. Due to unforeseen circumstances, he does not give the player a Gym Badge.
He is very cynical and pessimistic, even telling the player to give up before the gym match. Following the death of his wife, Elena, Corey raised Heather with no hope so that she would not be disappointed in anything - as a result, their relationship is cold.
In the game
This article contains some content relating to depression and suicide. Caution is advised.
Corey is first encountered, though not immediately named, in the Beryl Ward, where he, Taka and ZEL guard the PULSE Machine. He argues with Heather over her actions, ironically being told she "didn't come here to be lectured like you're my dad", and battled her while the player takes on his allies.
The plot here varies depending on whether or not all policemen have been found.
After Taka and ZEL escape, Corey attempts to do the same, but is stopped by the police, who promptly remove his hood, exposing his identity to both the player and Heather, who is emotionally shaken. Corey expressed that he had wanted to avoid such an outcome.
While the police were baffled that an upstanding person such as a Gym Leader would aid Team Meteor, Corey gives a cynical response about trusting authority, assuring the police that there are more such Team Meteor agents. After defiantly claiming the police force ultimately did nothing, he informed them that he would be at his gym and vanished.
After the player defeats Corey in a Gym Battle, Corey requests that the player go to Beryl Bridge, he would promise to answer the unanswered questions. When the player arrives at the bridge, Corey releases all of his Pokémon before explaining to the player his relationships with Team Meteor. He then requests that the player watch over Heather for him due to the Ruby Ring she has making her a target for Team Meteor and proceeds to throw himself off the bridge, resulting in his death.
After Taka and ZEL escape, Corey returns his Crobat to its Poke Ball before likewise retreating, prematurely ending his fight with Heather and escapes successfully. Because of this, it is never revealed to Heather that he was part of Team Meteor.
After the player defeats Corey in a Gym Battle, Corey requests that the player go to Beryl Bridge, Heather appears to announce she is leaving her dad for good. Corey tries to stop her but she doesn't listen, say she's sick of being told what she can't do. Before Heather leaves, Corey asks her not to lose her mother's ring. He then requests the player to Beryl bridge. When the player arrives at the bridge, Corey releases all of his Pokémon before explaining to the player his relationships with Heather. He then requests that the player watch over Heather for him due to the Ruby Ring she has making her a target for Team Meteor and proceeds to throw himself off the bridge, resulting in his death.
Corey's body was later found in the Lapis Ward by Victoria and Shelly. After the player arrives, Aster & Eclipse appear to confirm the death of Corey. Shade then appears out of nowhere and takes the body away.
Later on in the game after the player obtains the Silver Card, you can read in his journal that he originally joined Team Meteor in order to keep the Ruby Ring and sabotage them to get revenge on Sirius for killing his wife Elena.
In the Police Found plot, Corey is battled on a Corrosive Mist Field in a Single Battle format and has two Super Potions.
In the Police Farce plot, Corey is battled on a Corrosive Field in a Single Battle format and has one Super Potion.

|A special report from... the Investigation Squad!
Yo, Reborn City! What's up?! We're here with the Reborn Showdown giving you a look at the Leaders of the Reborn League! I'm your host, DJ Arclight, now on air!
Up today is Corey, the Beryl Ward's Poison Gym Leader!
An older man with more derision than a grandma at a metal show, this Poison Leader pours it thick with the pessimism.
Not a whole lot is known about the man, except that he frequently visits Beryl Cemetery. But who do you think that's for? Even I'm not sure. If you ask me, someone oughta go smack a smile to him. Life's too short to be moping around all the time, yanno?
Trainers, take old man Corey down a few notches for me, but when you do, be careful! His Crobat is a speed demo, and its attacks are no laughing matter. Take special care not to let it set up by keeping pressure on it with status moves or hard-hits. Perseverance will always win the day in the face of pessimism!
That's all for now, but remember, Trainers, Keep fighting with everything you've got! Hold your spirits high, and even you can defeat the Reborn League!
|Corey's Note for Heather (Beryl Gym)|
By the time you read this, you will be strong. I was not raised to be strong. I was raised to be naive, and I suffered for it. I shall not make this same mistake with you. Reality is cruel. This, I learned the hard way. This, you have grown to learn from the second you were born.
I told you long ago how she passed. I did not mention who was responsible for it. Team Meteor sought to cleanse the city and restore it to its former heritage-- a holy site. To this end, they take no prisoners. I joined their ranks to sabotage them.
Specifically, I sought the head of the man who killed your mother. He was after an artifact I foolishly bestowed upon her. He saw her life as a small price to pay for it. I will see to it that he pays what's due in his own blood. If you will join me, I will have you. It is your right as her daughter.
The man ended her life in poison. When I discovered her IV was laced, I struck out. One of the few things I can still take pride in is that man's scream as he pulled the syringe from his bleeding eye. He lived, but his wound is a mark on his life.
Since then, I coveted the venom that ended your mother Elena's dear life. From it, I have made poisons to corrupt. Poisons to control. And poisons to deliver retribution upon the guilty.
My beautiful daughter, we will settle this together."
