Hope is weakness. It's an illusion meant to sugarcoat this sickening reality.
Dr. Corey Molinar is a former Poison type Gym Leader of the Reborn League and the father of Heather.
He is very cynical and pessimistic, having given up on happiness and viewing hope as futile and a weakness. Following the death of his wife, Elena, Corey raised Heather with no hope so that she would not be disappointed in anything - as a result, their relationship is cold.
Story Events[]
Trigger Warning!
This article contains some content relating to depression and suicide. Caution is advised. |
Lower Peridot Ward (Optional)[]
Corey can first be encountered above the destroyed train station in the Lower Peridot Ward, offering medical help to injured survivors. Five people are waiting in a line to receive Corey's treatment, while a policeman is moderating the queue. His attitude is cold, distant, cynical, straight to the point, and he shows a glimpse of his ideology on life, pain and hope.
After the player defeats Aster and Eclipse in Mosswater Industrial but before defeating Julia, only two people remain waiting for assistance. If the player talks to Corey, he mentions that he's low on medicine, prompting the man waiting in line to steal said medicine. Corey then asks the player to recover the stolen supplies, which can be accomplished by finding the thief in the Peridot Ward alleyway. When the player returns to Corey, he thanks them and formally introduces himself by name. Afterwards, Corey leaves.
Obsidia Slums (Optional)[]
Corey can be next optionally found in the Obsidia Slums, offering his medical services there. When the player finds Corey, he is just finishing up with his last patient, who mentions that Corey is a former Gym Leader. Corey then spots the player, and is initially upset that the player barged in when they had no reason to.
If the player previously helped him recover the stolen medicine, he then explains that he's been providing medical care to the people in the area since traditional care is unavailable to them, asking for the player's discretion since this is not technically legal. If the player did not help Corey recover the medicine, he then introduces himself as Dr. Corey Molinar, asking for the player's discretion in exchange for said introduction. Regardless of route, Corey then leaves, telling the player that they never saw him there.
Obsidia Park[]
Corey is first non-optionally met while the player explores Obsidia Park as Meteor Agent Borealis. In a cutscene, he defeats Victoria and lambasts her for her poor performance and naive belief that she could help the city before capturing her.
Jasper Ward[]
Corey is then met alongside his daughter, Heather, when the player first enters the Jasper Ward. After Heather introduces herself to the player, Corey lectures her on not talking to strangers. Heather then runs off, declaring that she's going home. If the player both returned the stolen medicine and met Corey in the Slums, Corey tells the player that nothing good remains in the flora-covered wards and warns them about the dangers of childish naiveté before departing; if the player completed one of the two optional encounters, he simply tells the player to forget that they ever saw him and Heather. Corey then leaves.
After the player defeats Taka in the Malchous Forest Park and Heather helps them escape from the destroyed Jasper Gym, Corey finds the two outside. Corey lectures Heather for running off and making him worried before abruptly stopping when he notices that Heather's been carrying around her mother's Ruby Ring. Heather then asks why her father won't ever tell her anything about her mother; Corey insists it's for her safety, but Heather insists that she's fine and that she even fought Team Meteor. Corey then asks if Team Meteor saw her ring, to which Heather responds by flying off on her Salamence. Corey then tells the player to leave and never talk to him or his daughter again, asking the player if they understood before leaving.
Rhodochrine Jungle[]
Corey — as Borealis — is next encountered by the Rhodochrine Tree alongside Ace, Taka, and ZEL, guarding the PULSE Tangrowth. During the resulting showdown, Borealis faces off against Amaria, who criticizes his cynical outlook on life, telling him that some people are at least trying to make things better.
After the player defeats Ace, a mysterious private is shown defeating Heather, to which Borealis responds by ordering his Crobat to fly her out of the area. Borealis then asks the private on why she hurt a young child; the private tells him that she was never told not to, then asks him why he let an enemy escape. Ace also asks Borealis to explain, but is more hesitant than the private to immediately label his actions as insubordination.
Amaria then tells the player and Borealis to leave while she protects them from the mysterious private, after which Borealis and the player head to the Beryl Ward.
Plot Split!
The plot here varies depending on whether or not all policemen have been found in the Police Officers Sidequest. |
Once in the Beryl Ward, Borealis stops running, telling the player that there's no point in continuing. He then informs the player that the private joined mere weeks ago, but thinks she can do what she wants after merely one promotion. Furthermore, he reveals his identity as former Gym Leader Corey, explaining that because of his daughter's idiocy, he will now be considered a traitor to Meteor. Corey next asks the player to meet him at his home to face him before leaving.
Corey can then be found in the back room of the Beryl Gym. Once met, he tells the player that he tried to raise Heather without hope and that he has been trying to keep her safe before asking the player to show him their strength in a battle.
Once the player defeats Corey, he claims that "Borealis" is now defeated, since Sirius will have been told about his betrayal already, and asks the player to keep his daughter safe. Heather then enters the room, insisting that she can take care of herself; when Corey counters that she just was defeated, Heather realizes that it was her father's Crobat that saved her. She then lectures her father about not telling her anything and trying to control her, telling him that she's leaving — for good this time. Corey initially tries to stop her, but then tells her only to keep her mother's ring safe. Once she leaves, Corey invites the player to Beryl Bridge before leaving himself.
Once in the Beryl Ward, Borealis stops when a man blocks his path. Said man reveals himself to be a member of the police department, calling on his fellow officers to surround Borealis and arrest him. The police chief then tells Borealis that because of the player's assistance, they were able to round up enough manpower to pull off this operation at Amaria's request before revealing his identity as Corey Molinar.
Corey then tells the chief that he's been a double agent for quite some time, criticizing how he was trusted solely because he used to be part of the Reborn League. He then vanishes, and the police squad heads off to check his house to the north.
The player can meet up with the police inside the Beryl Gym, where several officers have been affected by mind-altering gas released by Corey. After the player solves the reactor puzzle, they can find Corey in his home inside the Gym. There, he tells the player that they've ruined everything before asking them to meet him in the arena. There, Corey tells the player that he tried to raise Heather without hope in the hopes of keeping her safe, then asks the player to show him their strength via battle. Before the fight, he furthermore explains that he's only been living for Heather and now must choose between his roles as Borealis and as her father, then breaks the glass of the surrounding reactors to release some kind of gas into the air.
Once the player defeats Corey, he claims that "Borealis" is now defeated, since Sirius will have been told about his betrayal already, and asks the player to keep his daughter safe. Heather then enters the room, explaining that she's already heard about his secret identity from the police and tells him that she's done with his lies. Corey insists that he's just trying to keep her safe, but Heather refuses to listen, instead resolving to fly away on her Salamence and leave — for good this time. Corey tries to convince her to stop, then asks her to keep her mother's ring safe. He then invites the player to Beryl Bridge before departing himself.Beryl Bridge[]
Corey can then optionally be found on Beryl Bridge, releasing his Pokémon. Even when his Crobat hesitates, Corey tells them that they're not wanted anymore. He then tosses their Poké Balls into Tourmaline Desert, where they can be picked up much later.
Corey then tells the player that that he didn't want to join Team Meteor, but he was afraid of losing Heather like he lost her mother during Heather's birth. Yet in the end, he's now lost everything; Heather has abandoned him, and he's been revealed as a traitor to Team Meteor. Corey asks the player to watch over Heather, informing them both that she will be chased down for her mother's ring and that he's embedded a data chip in the ring with information on Team Meteor. He then jumps off the side of the bridge.
He then tells the player that he didn't want to join Team Meteor, but it was the only way to keep his daughter safe. After giving his wife a brilliant Ruby Ring, she was murdered for it during Heather's birth. Corey found the supposed doctor, got revenge, and stole back the ring; however, he later promised to join Meteor in order to both keep the ring and ensure Heather's safety. Yet in the end, he's now lost everything; Heather has abandoned him, and he's been revealed as a traitor to Team Meteor and the police. Corey asks the player to watch over Heather, informing them both that she will be chased down for her mother's ring and that he's embedded a data chip in the ring with information on Team Meteor. He then jumps off the side of the bridge.
If the player does not head to Beryl Bridge before entering the Peridot Ward for the next time, this scene is skipped. Corey's body can still be found in the Lapis Ward later and skipping the cutscene has no effect on the overall story.
Lapis Ward[]
Corey's body can then be found in the Lapis Ward outside the Gym, with Shelly, Cal, and a crowd of onlookers nearby. After the player arrives, Aster and Eclipse watch from the rooftops to confirm Borealis's death. Shade then appears to take his body away and clean up the area.
Beryl Gym[]
If the player returns to the Beryl Gym after the events at Beryl Bridge, they can find Corey's Silver Ring in an item ball in his home. This item allows the player to obtain five of Corey's old Pokemon.
After obtaining the Silver Card in Citrine Mountain, the player can use it on a card scanner in Corey's gym to open up a back room. Along with several items, a letter written by Corey to Heather can be found. Here, he explains to her how he raised her to be strong and not naive, how his wife was killed by Team Meteor in search of the Ruby Ring, and that he joined to sabotage them, so he could take revenge on the man who murdered Elena. Corey then asks his daughter to join him in seeking revenge.
The Void[]
Corey appears several times during The Void segment in the Glass Workstation. After first briefly found falling, he (and several copies of him) are seen alongside Sirius and his dead wife. Shortly thereafter, he is seen watching over a sleeping Heather.
Beryl Bridge (again)[]
In the midst of advancing through Darkrai's nightmare, the player eventually ends up in Beryl Bridge. For the last time, Corey is encountered here. He is clad in Umbral aura, with his demeanor and thought being vastly different. Corey invites the player to watch the desert with him, and listen to his words. He asks the player if they and Heather have been well, and reveals that he's been watching the player's actions from the New World. This is thanks to Shade, who had kept a fragment of him when he died. After all the time that's passed, Corey can finally tell the player what he needed to say: an apology. Corey apologizes for the hurtful things he had said in his darkest moments. The player is not to blame for his words and actions, he affirms. Reminiscing about Elena- and his deep admiration of her- Corey comes to believe that Reborn and its people are finally healing. He posits great faith in the player, acknowledging their role in this. He also speaks of how confident Elena was in him, going as far as to compare him to the young prodigy Champions of other regions. With this, Corey offers the player a fair fight, admitting they are long overdue one. Now that Corey is finally motivated to try and believe in himself after Elena's death, he is able to enjoy his fight against the player.
Unfortunately, defeat takes away with Umbral status; and so does his newly gained character and hope go away as well. His speech often carries accusations levied at the player. He calls them worse than himself, believing that they poison everything the player touches. He puts the burden of every death caused by Lin and Team Meteor on the player. That is, every death after the player began to oppose them, as Corey claims Meteor's desperation drove the terrorists to further harm others. For all of these things, and for allegedly poisoning his daughter against him, Corey commits suicide once again. He refuses to let the player have the satisfaction of saving everyone. Corey's only solace he takes, is in his hopes of seeing Elena once again with his true death.

A special report from... the Investigation Squad!
Yo, Reborn City! What's up?! We're here with the Reborn Showdown giving you a look at the Leaders of the Reborn League! I'm your host, DJ Arclight, now on air! Up today is Corey, the Beryl Ward's Poison Gym Leader! An older man with more derision than a grandma at a metal show, this Poison Leader pours it thick with the pessimism. Not a whole lot is known about the man, except that he frequently visits Beryl Cemetery. But who do you think that's for? Even I'm not sure. If you ask me, someone oughta go smack a smile to him. Life's too short to be moping around all the time, yanno? Trainers, take old man Corey down a few notches for me, but when you do, be careful! His Crobat is a speed demo, and its attacks are no laughing matter. Take special care not to let it set up by keeping pressure on it with status moves or hard-hits. Perseverance will always win the day in the face of pessimism! That's all for now, but remember, Trainers, Keep fighting with everything you've got! Hold your spirits high, and even you can defeat the Reborn League! |
Journal Entry[]
Corey's Note for Heather (Beryl Gym) |
"For Heather, By the time you read this, you will be strong. I was not raised to be strong. I was raised to be naive, and I suffered for it. I shall not make this same mistake with you. Reality is cruel. This, I learned the hard way. This, you have grown to learn from the second you were born. I told you long ago how she passed. I did not mention who was responsible for it. Team Meteor sought to cleanse the city and restore it to its former heritage-- a holy site. To this end, they take no prisoners. I joined their ranks to sabotage them. Specifically, I sought the head of the man who killed your mother. He was after an artifact I foolishly bestowed upon her. He saw her life as a small price to pay for it. I will see to it that he pays what's due in his own blood. If you will join me, I will have you. It is your right as her daughter. The man ended her life in poison. When I discovered her IV was laced, I struck out. One of the few things I can still take pride in is that man's scream as he pulled the syringe from his bleeding eye. He lived, but his wound is a mark on his life. Since then, I coveted the venom that ended your mother Elena's dear life. From it, I have made poisons to corrupt. Poisons to control. And poisons to deliver retribution upon the guilty. My beautiful daughter, we will settle this together." |

Trivia[]
- His name is a word play from "corrosive", a chemical process.
- Corey's VS sprite is based on that of Koga from Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.
- Shade has a Gengar named after Corey, some suggest that the Gengar was Corey himself.
- In earlier versions of the game, Corey was the active Poison-type leader at the time the player battles him, and the player's victory is considered void because the badge was not handed over before his suicide, an event that immediately handed off the title to the reserve leader, Aya. As of the latest release, he is already retired by the time he is met, instead working as a double agent for Team Meteor as well as a part-time pro-bono physician for the residents of the slums. When he asks the player to battle him in his gym, the communication system turns on, and a confused Ame questions the purpose of a battle with a former leader.
- Corey's suicide was in one of the four image to be seen in Shade's Gym, the other three being Amaria's suicide, Kiki's death, and Lin's death.
- Five of Corey's released Pokemon can be caught: they are Skrelp, Toxapex, Croagunk, Nidorina, and Skuntank. You need his Silver ring in his private room in order to get his pokemon. Corey's final Pokémon - Crobat - is in the possession of Heather.
- The diary in his room reveals that Corey's wife was killed by Sirius.
- After his death, Corey's ghost will appear on a rooftop in Beryl Ward and after seeing you, he will jump off again. After tracking Corey's ghost in Peridot Ward, where he will be behind the pokemart, he will show up again in a messy house near team Magma base. It appears to be a Zorua in disguise.
- You can find a grave with Corey's name on it in Byxbysion Wasteland, right next to one inscribed "Elena Molinar".
- During the online league, Corey was just as pessimistic as he was in the game. [1]
- According to an interview with Amethyst, Corey is based on a real life person who likewise committed suicide.
