I guess I have a habit of not really being what people want me to be.
Cal seems to be a calm and isolated person, but in the past he used to be aggressive and short tempered. He attended Apophyll Academy in the hopes that he let go of his anger issues against his brother, Blake, who was always got the attention from his family. Cal used to be friends with Shelly, but broke apart after he caused a certain incident.
In the game[edit | edit source]
Cal is first met on the peak of Pyrous Mountain. He was the former Fire-type Gym Leader before he retired to find himself and become one of Kiki's top apprentices at her academy. The player first meets and battles Cal as a test from Kiki. Cal admits to the player that he has spent most of his life trying to one up his brother Blake and escape from his shadow. He further states how he used to watch over Shelly and have a close bond with her due to family issues. However, Shelly said something that threw him off and reacted terribly, causing their bond to fall apart. Once defeated, he states that he started training Fire types to counter his brother's Ice type.
Later on Cal was found on the peak of Pyrous Mountain with Taka and Solaris. When Victoria asked Cal, he told her that he was too weak and couldn't defeat them. After the player loses to (or defeats) Solaris, Kiki appears and attempts to stop the PULSE-Camerupt from destroying the island. After Cal stops Kiki's attempt at destroying the PULSE-Camerupt, Solaris' Garchomp kills Kiki. Shocked at Solaris' actions, Cal destroys the PULSE-Camerupt with his Magmorter. After Team Meteor leaves Pyrous Mountain, Cal attempts to make an apology to Victoria, which she rejects. Cal then leaves the area.
Later on, the player meets Cal in the South Obsidia Ward. He tells the player that he never wanted any of that to happen and explained the reasons behind him joining Team Meteor. He also states that he secretly sabotaged the PULSE-Camerupt as he was fond of the Academy and didn't want it to be destroyed. He then asks the player if they trust the reasons for his actions. Regardless of the answer, he thanks the player before leaving.
|This article contains plot details about events that occur later in the game.|
The player and Shelly goes to Ametrine City, making their way to Blake's apartment. Shelly asks where Heather is, to which Blake dismisses the importance of her being found. However, he then gives the option of revealing Heather's location and HMX5 Waterfall in exchange for the Ruby Ring. The player then has the choice of giving the ring or keeping it for oneself.
Depending if you gave Blake the Ruby Ring or not, the events during Ametrine City will be different.
Give the Ruby Ring[edit | edit source]
If the player gives Blake the ring, they are given HMX5 Waterfall and told a hint that the secret entrance is in the apartment somewhere in the apartment [NOTE: You are given HMX5 Waterfall later regardless if you choose to give Blake the ring].
Upon finding the secret entrance, Shelly and the player go to the shed where they find Heather inside, however Cal arrives and Shelly is scared off by him due to Cal's past anger towards her. Cal releases Heather, who after some explanation takes off to stop Team Meteor while Cal goes on ahead to stop them.
The player then makes their way up the mountain with Shelly, where upon reaching a large flight of stairs, is pushed down and caught by Cal who very briefly tries to makeup with her. Shelly stays behind to think about what just happened, and the player and Cal team up to climb the rest of the mountain up until Blake pushes Cal off. The player then reaches the peak of the mountain and fights Blake.
Keep the Ruby Ring[edit | edit source]
Finding out that the player has the ring, Blake will steal the ring and make a getaway, leaving Heather's location a mystery. However, when the player steps outside of the building, they are greeted with a newly blue-dyed-hair Cal, who apologizes to Shelly for losing his temper in the past due to his drive to surpass his brother Blake and makes amends with Shelly. Cal then tells the player that Blake's apartment has a secret passage and takes off to stop Team Meteor.
After finding the secret door, the player and Shelly make their way to a shed with Heather inside. Setting her free, Shelly and Heather make up with one another and take to the sky to catch up with Blake. The player then teams up with Cal and Shelly on their pursuit after Blake up Ametrine Mountain. Before reaching the peak, the player is stopped by Aster in attempt to stop them (Due to the player wasting slightly more time from refusing Blake). After defeating Aster, he gives the player TMX Waterfall and bids farewell. Upon reaching the peak, Shelly is defeated in battle and Blake fights the player.
After the battle ends, Cal and Heather fly by and attack Blake, stealing the ring in the process. Blake makes his escape, telling the group that there was never a signal making Agate City fall asleep on the mountain and Heather gets her Ruby Ring back. After Heather and Shelly decide to go return the food supplies to the town people, Cal discusses that the person (Terra) who tipped them off about a signal was lying, and offers the player a lift back down.
During the void sequence in the Glass Workstation, its revealed what exactly happened in the incident that caused Shelly and Cal to fall apart. When Shelly told Cal about wanting to earn her brother's love, Cal physically hurt her, causing her to run away, which was why she was scared of Cal when they met again. Another sequence soon comes after where a younger version of Blake physically hurt a younger version of Cal, causing him to also run away. As the player walks through the void, its seems to reveal why Blake hates Cal so much. When they were younger, Blake and Cal got kicked out of the house by their father when Cal did something wrong, leaving them in the cold snow. Cal apologizes to Blake and asks if their father would be mad after this. Blake replies that Cal isn't sorry, and tells him he rather be like their father then his brother.

Trivia[edit | edit source]
- Cal's name could be a reference to 'calor', a Latin word meaning 'heat'.
- Cal bears some resemblance to Malva of the Kalos region in the official Pokemon games, as both are Fire-type specialists who are part of their region's respective criminal organisations.
- Prior to Episode 17, all of Cal's Pokémon used during the player's battle with him on Pyrous Mountain, with the exception of his ace, were fully-evolved starter Pokémon.
- Cal originally had blue hair but dyed it red to stand out from his brother, Blake. Later on in the story his hair color is returned to its natural blue color. If you look closer on his VS sprite with red hair, you can still see his blue roots.
- Cal and Blake's relationship can be related to Cain and Abel, where Cal is the Abel to Blake's Cain.
- Cal has an illegal Magmortar that knows Blast Burn, which it cannot learn through legitimate means.
