Cal Whitaker, also known under the codename Canis Minor, is a former Fire type Gym Leader of Reborn and the younger brother of Blake.
Cal seems to be a calm and isolated person, but in the past he used to be aggressive and short tempered. He attended Apophyll Academy in the hopes that he let go of his anger issues against his brother, Blake, who was always got the attention from his family. Cal used to be friends with Shelly, but broke apart after he caused a certain incident.
Story Events[]
Peridot Ward[]
Cal can be seen with his friend Shelly in Lapis Ward from Peridot Ward after the player defeats Julia but before they defeat Florinia.
Lapis Ward[]
He is met officially for the first time in the Lapis Ward, trying to protect Shelly from seeing Corey's dead body after he fell from Beryl Bridge. Shelly then notices Aster and Eclipse on a nearby rooftop, them coming to check on Corey's status. Cal yells at them to leave, which the pair does, but not before revealing that Team Meteor was responsible for the explosion in North Obsidia. Cal then yells at Shade when he comes to collect Corey's remains, then tells the player to get out of his way and that the gym's closed before he and Shelly go inside the Lapis Gym.
Once the player rescues Victoria from the caverns beneath the Grand Stairway and defeats both her and Fern, the player can return to the Lapis Ward. Upon attempting to enter the gym, Cal blocks the entrance and tells the player to leave before challenging them to a battle. Once the player defeats Cal, Victoria shows up and asks what's going on. Cal replies that the gym's closed because Shelly's had to deal with enough already after witnessing Corey's suicide and Fern tormenting her during his gym match. Victoria tells Cal that they actually came here to help, after which Cal lets her and the player into the Gym.
Lapis Gym[]
Once the player enters the Gym and heads upstairs, they will find Victoria, Cain, and Shelly waiting for them. After a brief conversation, Cain mentions that he came here looking for Heather since she and Shelly are friends. Upon hearing Heather's name, Shelly gets sick after realizing that the person she watched fall off Beryl Bridge was her friend's dad. The player, Cain, and Cal head downstairs, where Cal asks the player if they can go talk to the nearby doctor and see if he can help Shelly.
After the player returns, Cal stays upstairs with Victoria while the player navigates the Gym to challenge Shelly. Victoria takes this time to teach Cal basic meditation practices, which are interrupted when the player returns with their badge and Dr. Connal shows up to see Shelly. After Sigmund enrages Cal by mentioning how his brother defeated him despite the type-disadvantage and criticizing his short temper, Cal slaps Shelly when she claims (erroneously) that both she and Cal want their brothers to like and respect them.
Cal then heads outside, with Victoria following shortly thereafter. When Victoria tries to talk to him, Cal tells her that he's aware what he did to Shelly was horrible and that he just needs to be left alone. Victoria then invites him to Apophyll Academy where he can learn to control his temper, and the two head off.
Pyrous Mountain[]
By the time the player makes it to Apophyll themselves, Cal has become one of Kiki's most promising apprentices. After the player talks to Kiki and Victoria and explains that they need the TMX for Strength to rescue the captured children, Kiki asks the player to defeat either Victoria or Cal to prove their strength.
Cal can be found at the top of Pyrous Mountain, meditating. When the player approaches (which can be done before talking to Kiki, although this only results in minor dialogue changes), he tells them that he's ashamed of his prior actions and that the program at Apophyll has been very helpful in teaching him to take responsibility for his actions and calming his anger. He then fights the player. After being defeated, Cal asks about Shelly, only to become briefly angered when he learns that she's been captured. He then offers the player a ride down to the base of Pyrous Mountain.
Later, the player heads back up to Pyrous Mountain's peak to stop Team Meteor and the PULSE that has been set up there. Since Cain and Cal appear to have already been defeated, Victoria and the player fight Taka and Solaris, respectively. After the fight (win or loss on the player's part), Kiki appears and attempts to use her Medicham to stop the PULSE Camerupt. Cal intervenes, ordering his Magmortar to stop her Medicham and throw them into the lava on Solaris's request, revealing that he's been working with Team Meteor under the codename "Canis Minor". Cal then turns on Team Meteor after Solaris uses his Garchomp to murder Kiki, destroying the PULSE with his Magmortar. After Team Meteor leaves, Cal attempts to explain himself, but leaves after Victoria rejects any attempt at explanation.
South Obsidia Ward[]
Cal intercepts the player in the South Obsidia Ward as they leave the Byxbysion Wasteland after defeating Aya, asking them to please give him a chance to explain himself. Here, he tells the player that he secretly sabotaged the PULSE when Team Meteor ordered him to set it up and never meant for anyone to get hurt. Cal then gives the player the TMX for Strength, explaining that he stole the machine in order to take the machinery up to the top of Pyrous.
Ametrine City[]
When the player and Shelly ask Blake about Heather in Ametrine City, he tells them that he's part of Team Meteor and offers to trade information about Heather and the TMX for Waterfall in exchange for the Ruby Ring. Depending on whether the player accepts this trade or refuses Blake, the events of Ametrine will be different, including Cal's role.
After Shelly and the player find where Heather's been locked up, Cal appears to offer his help. Shelly runs off when she sees Cal, apologizing to him before leaving. Cal then tells the player that he can't blame Shelly for being upset before using his Magmortar to melt down the door and free Heather. Cal then tells Heather that Blake has her mom's ring and is trying to hand it off to Solaris, after which she flies off. Cal then tells the player to find Shelly before he leaves.
Once the player meets up with Shelly just outside Ametrine City, she fights alongside them for the first two battles against Team Meteor as they make their way up Ametrine Mountain. Just before the third battle, one of the Meteor Aces nearby knocks Shelly off the mountain, but she is rescued by Cal, who then battles alongside the player. Cal then apologizes to Shelly about what happened earlier before heading off to stop his brother.
If Saphira was kidnapped earlier at the Belrose Manse, Cal and the player fight another Meteor duo as they climb higher; regardless, Cal finally reaches Blake further up. Blake taunts Cal before ordering two Meteor Aces to fight him and the player; after they are defeated, Blake pushes Cal off the side of the mountain.
After refusing Blake, he tells the player that he had to lock Heather up for sharing food before he leaves to deliver the ring to Solaris. Shelly heads outside to ask around more, where she runs into Cal, hair newly re-dyed blue. Cal apologizes for what happened back in the Lapis Gym and asks Shelly not to be scared of him because he's the one who made mistakes, not her. The two then agree to work together to save Heather and stop Team Meteor, Cal asking Shelly and the player to go rescue Heather while he slows down Blake.
After Heather has been rescued, Cal can be found facing off against Blake just outside Ametrine City. Blake dismisses Cal's repeated attempts to talk to him, instead having other members of Team Meteor fight the player, Cal, and Shelly as they make their way up the mountain. Cal partners with the player for the first two fights, and Shelly fights alongside the player for the third, fourth, and fifth fights (the fourth only occurring if Saphira is abducted at the Belrose Manse), as Cal has flown off on his Charizard to help with aerial cover.Once the player reaches Ametrine Mountain's peak, they fight Blake regardless of route. After the player defeats Blake, Cal steals the Ruby Ring from Blake and returns it to Heather. Blake then leaves, although not before informing everyone that whoever told them that the Agate sleep spell was controlled from here was lying. Cal then confirms that Terra is working with Team Meteor before offering the player a ride back down to Ametrine City.
The Void[]
During the void sequence in the Glass Workstation, a younger version of Blake physically hurt a younger version of Cal, causing him to also run away. As the player walks through the void, its seems to reveal why Blake hates Cal so much. When they were younger, Blake and Cal got kicked out of the house by their father when Cal did something wrong, leaving them in the cold snow. Cal apologizes to Blake and asks if their father would be mad after this. Blake replies that Cal isn't sorry, and tells him he rather be like their father then his brother.
Calcenon City[]
Cal next shows up in Calcenon City after the player has acquired their seventeenth Gym Badge from Hardy, carrying a message from Heather to Shelly. For the first time since Pyrous, he interacts with Victoria, who is initially still furious at him for his betrayal. Cal then explains to her that he had sabotaged the PULSE, Eve backing him up. Furthermore, Cal reveals that he rescued both the Camerupt that was used to power the PULSE and Kiki's Medicham, causing Victoria to run off to think things over.
Bennett and Hardy then let Cal know that the group is planning to raid Labradorra City, leading Cal to join them so that he can look out for Victoria as she searches for Solaris. If talked to before the raid, Cal will inform the player that he didn't tell them about the rescued Pokémon earlier because he wasn't sure at that time if they'd recover and didn't want to make promises he couldn't keep.
Labradorra City[]
During the raid on Labradorra City, Cal appears fighting a Meteor Grunt with his Torkoal. After the player has defeated Zero and PULSE-Clawitzer, Cal and Serra can be found having found Sigmund and attempting to keep Saphira from attacking him. Lin then appears, first attacking Saphira and then dragging Dr. Connal away.
Cal first appears in Labradorra after the player and Victoria have found Solaris being kept captive by Team Meteor with one eye damaged. He intervenes when Victoria threatens Solaris for having killed Kiki, asking her if this is what her mentor would really have wanted and escorting her outside when she hesitates to follow through on her threats.

Cal is one of the sixteen participants in the Labradorra Tournament; however, the specifics of his involvement vary by route.
In the first round of the tournament, Cal is partnered up with Victoria against Taka and Zero. Cal is first referred to as a "Traitor", similar to the remaining three participants, and later as Victoria's "USELESS FLAMING HOMO boyfri3nd" by Terra. While Victoria complains about having Cal as her partner, Cal focuses on winning the fight. Despite Cal's disadvantage on the Underwater Field, Cal and Victoria win the first round.
Cal then has to fight Victoria in the second round of the tournament. Before this battle, Victoria repeatedly asks Terra to just start the battle already; in contrast, Cal tries to get her to calm down and explains that she's lost control of herself.
After defeating Victoria, Cal then fights the player in the third round of the tournament on the Dragon's Den field. Cal is referred to by Terra as "THE FLAMING FIST OF CHILD ABUSE". Even before the fight, Cal is resigned to his loss, noting that he doesn't know much about the player but trusts them anyway, and is eventually defeated by the player.

Even before the fight, Cal is resigned to his loss, noting that he doesn't know much about the player but trusts them anyway, and is eventually defeated by the player.Victory Road[]
Cal finds the player outside the first gem logic puzzle in Victory Road, assisting them in solving it.
Cal next shows up on the Charous Path after Victoria fails to follow through on her threats to Solaris. He asks her if this is what Kiki would want and reminds her that Kiki chose her to succeed her, which convinces Victoria to back down. If the player backtracks before exiting the area, they can find Cal and Victoria having a conversation. Here, Victoria thanks Cal for helping her and finally forgives him for having joined Team Meteor. She then asks Cal out on a date, admitting she used to like him before the events at Pyrous Mountain; however, Cal is gay — and says so, before Victoria returns to Apophyll and Cal goes to look for his brother.
He then shows up on the bottom level of Victory Road's Sapphire Branch, having found his brother and defeated him. When the player shows up, Cal leaves, refusing to listen to Blake's taunts and stating that there's only one exit so there's no way for Blake to escape. He later shows up on the bottom level of Victory Road's Sapphire Branch, having found his brother and defeated him. Trivia[]
- Cal's name could be a reference to 'calor', a Latin word meaning 'heat'.
- Cal bears some resemblance to Malva of the Kalos region in the official Pokemon games, as both are Fire-type specialists who are part of their region's respective criminal organisations.
- Prior to Episode 17, all of Cal's Pokémon used during the player's battle with him on Pyrous Mountain, with the exception of his ace, were fully-evolved starter Pokémon. His first fight in the Lapis Ward is partially a reference to this.
- Cal originally had blue hair but dyed it red to stand out from his brother, Blake. Later on in the story he re-dyes his hair back to its natural blue color. If you look closer on his VS sprite with red hair, you can still see his blue roots. According to Ame, his sprite was continually edited to show slightly more of the blue roots throughout the online league.
- Cal and Blake's relationship can be related to Cain and Abel, where Cal is the Abel to Blake's Cain.
- Cal has an illegal Magmortar that knows Blast Burn, which it cannot learn through legitimate means.
